I'm making out my Christmas list, and have a question for you guys...ATI shows a 6.325" and a 7" balancer for the SBC. I've never understood why, but never really needed to know til now.

bigger, larger dia. is better. if you have a Jessel belt system, you can use an 8" narrow width, not the wide 8".

Call ATI and let them tell you exactly what balancer you need. Their balancers are tuned, by any number of factors. They offer multiple diameters, various numbers and locations of o-rings, different materials for different weights, and even different durometer o-rings. All so you get the damper that works for what you are putting it on.

The smaller balancer will run faster on the car, larger one will make a smother engine and show more h.p. on the dyno but will not accelerate as quickly. You might also want to think about ATI's balancer that has the magnets already built into it for the crank trigger,if you already have a crank trigger just be aware that some machining will be required around the inside lip of the crank trigger wheel to make it seat properly, this did not used to be the case but they have changed the lip on the balancers within the last year. Its only an issue if you are using a crank trigger.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Aaron, I forgot to say this is for a stocker so no crank trigger.

Paul, if it helps you decide, we have the smallest aluminum damper ATI makes on the 427 Stock engines we race. And we do not use those heavy flexplates either.
