Need some advice.
I'm installing a used ring and pinion in a Dana 60. I've had this thing all over and cannot get the ideal pattern. They do not make this ratio anymore which is why I'm using a used one. The Dana goes in a 3600lb footbrake Super Stock car. Last edited by littlemanjoe; 08-08-2024 at 10:51 PM. |

Joe,
I learned a trick that makes things so much easier. Hone the Carrier bearings so they slip on my hand (ie are not pressed on). Don't get carried away you don't want the bearing sloppy on the Carrier. My engine guy did the honing. If you are pressing the bearings on you may not be pinching the shims tight. Ray

Set it up by the Pinion Depth markings on the gear, Proper pinion bearing preload, And backlash marked on the gear.

I am not seeing any pattern on the ring gear. Put some pressure against the ring gear when checking the pattern. Looks like it might be a mismatched gear set.

Looks to me like you don't have enough pinion shim. Have you tried quiet a bit more than what you currently have? I would try at least .015 more and see what it looks like.

Use this thickness chart if you do not have access to the old shim or the old gear was not set up correctly.
I also use this chart to start over when I'm having trouble getting a pattern. GM .035 FORD 8"-9" *020 FORD 8.8"-7.5" .030 ALL DANA'S .035 8 3/4 X 1 3/4 PIN .090 8 3/4 X 1 7/8 PIN .020 MOPAR 9 1/4 .020 |
