1957 was the first year for s/s. Dont remember a national points champ. I have CRS but the Nationals S/S champ that year was a guy named Zink. Thats about all I remember.

What I remember from the 50's (gee) is that S/S was the fastest class in Stock Eliminator which was S/S, then A thru E. Now maybe that was local, but it was NHRA sanctioned and was run at all the old airport tracks. Then there was some variation for the faster U/S (ultra stock) which was then followed by S/S then A-E. Around 60-61 A friend had a 60 Impala Convertable 348/335 which ran S/S whereas the lighter 2 DR. Hdtp ran U/S with the same combo. In 58, the 57 Chevrolet car 283/270 ran S/S and the 58 Impala 348/280 (3 carb) ran A/S.

I beg to differ. It was the first year NHRA ran a class "called" S/S in Oklahoma at the 57 Nationals. It was NOT run as a seperate eliminator at that time. Just class. They had six classes S/S, A/S, B/S, C/S, D/S and E/S.
Just to add that an accual Super Stock elim. was developed in 1967 with 10 classes. Ed Miller won the World Finals in that year with a 65 4 speed Hemi Plymouth. Prior to that it was called Top Stock which could include AA/S, A/S, Optional (1961) S/S, Super Stock and Super Super Stock. The rules and names of the classes/eliminator changed almost every year. The question was somwhat misleading. Last edited by X-TECH MAN; 08-10-2010 at 02:08 PM. |

Jerry Weidenman won the Nationals, I think the next year, with a red & white fuel injected '57 Chevy 2dr sedan. Forget now if it was a 150 or 210 series. Think it was a 210. Jerry also got the only 1961 409" here in town. Red Biscayne 2 door sedan. In '62 everybody had one. Last I heard Jerry was retired as a fishing guide in east Texas.

x-teck man is right, but I don't think you can call the 57 race as the 1st.
