For a few minutes I can shelf my bias against some of what the “Pro” classes have brought to our sport and extend a heartfelt RIP to one of the most competitive racers and team owners our sport has ever known. Spotted on FB what Kevin Helms posted and then reading the tribute paid by Geoff Turk you can understand the loss to our racing community.
RIP Don

Don had the first Funny Car with independent front suspension. The chassis was built by Little John Butera. I believe it was about 1970.

I first saw Don compete at Orange County Raceway in 1970, he was attending a Funny Car Meet. Driving a gorgeous over the top Barracuda, I was stationed in Long Beach and me and a friend drove up to see the Funny Car Meet in a 57 Desoto with no brakes , but we made it. There was a 64 Funny Car Field, had a great time, don't remember who won. We just needed a drag racing fix.
