Thumbs down Houston Raceway Park to Close in 2022

https://www.nhra.com/news/2021/houst...national-event

Quote:
NHRA and Houston Raceway Park have teamed up to announce the final NHRA SpringNationals as the historic track will close following the 2022 event.

As NHRA looks to the future, the leadership team continues its conversations with Tulsa Raceway Park, and other venues not currently on the circuit, to fill the spot of the Houston event in future NHRA seasons.

Is Joliet gone for good? I read rumors that the NASCAR track was dead, but the dragstrip was still alive. Nothing credible though.

It’s not looking good. Closed during 2020 season and remains closed this year …

WFO had Alexis DeJoria on this afternoon and she said that the Circuits of America near Austin were looking into building a dragstrip but, with the politics of having 2 NE already in Texas that trying to get a third probably wasn't going to happen, now that Houston will be done after 2022, she said it opens the door for COA to build a dragstrip and host a NE. It's kinda like what is happening down in South Jersey, Millville would love to build a drag strip but, with Atco still open way too many politics going on, when I e-mailed their GM last year, he said if Atco were to close they would definitely explore building a National Event capacity track.

COA would be an awesome venue, fantastic facilities. I was just at a driving event last Friday and looking at the front straight the shut down would go uphill similar to Sonoma. Tremendous amount of acreage around the place to hopefully preclude sprawling from commercial and private parties and since they’ve had a Formula One race and now even a NASCAR race there I don’t think it’s going anywhere.
