Not exactly a racing question but a mechanical one.
I have a 06 Chev 2500 with a 6.0 engine, I've noticed a lifter noise upon start up in the morning. I checked the oil level. Full. The next day, the noise was still there. I noticed it only had 25# of oil pressure. After you drive it a few miles it climbs up to 50-55# and the noise goes away. Then I put another oil filter on it. No change. It seems to have low oil pressure at start up and the increases to normal pressure after a few miles. note, I use 15-40w oil in that truck and change the oil every 5k miles since new. I had this conversation with my neighbor, who is an accomplished circle track engine builder, who was smiling as i was explaining this story to him. It seems we have a mutual friend with the same truck. same engine, same mileage and same problem. He is pulling the engine as we speak. vehicles with variable cam timing have the oil pressure moving up and down to control the cam timing. That is why it is important to use the correct oil. U tube may hav a better explanation.

If it has a fair amount of miles, which I'm assuming it does. I would recommend dropping the pan and cleaning the sludge out of the oil pan as well as changing the o ring on the pickup tube. Even engines that are serviced properly will still develop some build up at the bottom of the pan.

so heres the deal,, i had the same issue , there is an oring on the pick up tube going into the pump,,, when its cold its sucking air through the oring and not enough oil ,, when it warms up the pressure is good (oring expands ) ,, its not an easy job to tackle
pull the front cover, pull the pump and change out the oring,the pick up tube stays in the pan , i put in a mellings high volume pump in for good measure,this can be done with out dropping the pan there is a you tube video on it gmonde |

Thanks for the response. It seems most everyone points to the o ring on the pickup.

We had the same problem with an 2006 Traillazer SS. Ended up costing us a cam. lifters, and other stuff. There is a company called Improved Racing over in Jupiter Fla.,they make a oil pump pickup brace for $24.00, looks like a dist. hold down clamp for a small block Ford. It lets you use 2 bolts to hold the pickup to the oil pump, just like God and Melling had invisioned. This engine always had Royal Purple 5-30, Lucas syn. stabilizer and K&N filter. After another 80k miles it was still going strong. Just think of all the money people had to spend because g m didn't want to use 2 bolts. John Kissel

Both of my neighbors had start lifter noise. Replaced lifters and fixed per dealership recommendation.

Also check for coolant getting into the oil, from what I have seen not enough to show on the dipstick will show in top of the valve covers creates a sludge in the engine. GM had some porosity issues with some of there heads. Google for more info and how to identify head castings with issues. Something to look for.
