It would help me to understand exactly what being a National Open race means.

It's like a non points earning divisional race less the alcohol cars. But they count as a grade point. Most are only one or two days and lightly attended, but they are usually fast paced and can be a lot of fun. Some are in remote areas of the divisions to make earning a grade point easier for the racers that have to travel great distances to earn them.
The Dutch Classic is by far the most popular of them all, it can be great for setting records and is probably, besides Indy, the biggest stock/super stock event there is. Could be 250 plus stk/SS cars there this weekend. There are .90 classes and top dragster, top sportsman and comp, but they are not heavily populated. Opens are all run fields, and no ahfs.

The National Opens for class cars that I have attended in D5 amount to no AHFS in effect and Stock and Super Stock get to compete against each other. Everything else is the same as running a divisional including fuel check, weight and tech. I am surprised that other divisions do not have them. We typically have 60+ S/SS cars attend.

At least in div1, they do not pay contingency $ So payouts may be increased.

There is a fee of around $5,000 to host a Nat`l Open at your track, so that may be why there aren`t more. The Nat`l Open we have at Denver is a one day event, tech and scales only, no fuel check.

A $5,000 fee? They should pay the track that much since just to hold it 'cause without grade points folks can't enter those fine NHRA National Events!

In Div 5, the Midwest Class Racers organization partners with NHRA and the host track to run a Stock/Super Stock combo race on Saturday at select National Opens. This season, we did it with the Earlville, Iowa and Kearney, Nebraska National Opens.
So, we have two races in one weekend...both with vastly increased purse money over a traditional National Open. The payout this last weekend at Kearney was $2,000 win, $1,000 r/u, $500 semis, etc. ![]()

These races need to be hosted, supported, and encouraged. Many are held in conjunction with other races in order to make them feasible. The extra grade points sure help,as well. Stock and Super Stock are combined. Wait until you race an 8.25 SS/GT car with your 12.20 stocker. Dial hard and don't lift,or you're through!

At the Indy Open this weekend you can pay extra $50. to make runs on Friday, and pay extra to run a bracket race on Saturday so you can make a lot of runs if you like.
