My small block ford has 80 psi cold at idle around 1200 rpm, drops to around 65 to 70 psi warm. I am running a Melling high volume pump and 10/30 oil, what is your bearing clearance? in my experience 80 psi is not uncommon to see with a cold engine and a high volume pump in a small block with .002 bearing clearance. I have heard it said that you want to see 10 psi per 1000 rpm. Mine goes through the traps in the 7000 rpm range with about 85 psi.

If you build your motors with ~.002-.0025" bearing clearance like I do my big blocks and use 20-50 oil,80 psi cold is about normal. I always make sure that I throughly warm the oil before I rev it. Although I have never done it it's probably possible to blow out the oil filter gasket or o-ring if you rev it cold.
