Ran across this picture today while scanning Ed McGlawhorn's pictures. The picture is dated July, 3, 1966. The picture has Ed's "Mr. Ed" '55 Chevy up against what appears to be Jim Waibel's "Fugitive" '57 210 sedan. Do any of you old timers remember this particular race or the track?

Neat!
Would this be the old North Myrtle Beach Drag Strip that was IHRA in the 70's? If so it's one of the tracks i've never found pictures of. I don't think any of it remains either. I've guessed it's location as where River Hills Dr is now. Last edited by Tom P; 10-06-2008 at 09:38 PM. |

Tom,
I have no idea. I've heard some of the older guys talk about racing there but I don't know anything about the track or where it was actually located. Maybe Tom Gould will see this and help out. Bob Rice |

I RACED AT THE MYRTLE BEACH DRAG STRIP ONLY ONCE AND THAT WAS IN THE LATE 60s OR EARLY 70s. THE TRACK WAS ONLY OPEN FOR A SHORT TIME BECAUSE FROM WHAT I CAN REMEMBER THERE WAS A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT SAFETY AND I THINK A RACER WAS KILLED THERE.

I believe this is the old Myrtle Beach drag strip; however, that was a long time ago. There were so many of these strips up and down the East coast. At the East Coast Drag Race Reunion next week-end I will ask Bret Kepner, MC for the event, what he knows about the old strip. Some years ago Bret began a registry of all of the strips across the country.
Many of the old drivers, like the one who has this photo, should along with their family, attend this event. There are so many drivers who were out their in those days racing every night of the week and on the week-end who don't know about the event. There are many of us who ran on these old tracks that get together and talk about the old times and really how much fun it was. There are family members of drivers who have found out about the event only after a racer has just passed away. Look at a book called Super Stock Drag Racing, the family sedan, and see the photos in there from Easy Street, Broad Slab, Fayetteville Air Strip, New Bern, Sanford and on the inside page is Billy West and Melvin Yow at Easy Street, Kenny Warren and the Viginia Twister, Bobby Warren and the list goes on many of these folks and some of their cars are at this event. |

I spoke to dad this weekend about the photo and the race. It was a NHRA divisional points meet at Myrtle Beach. He did not remember the location of the track or the official track name. He did remember the story about the safety issue as he mentioned about someone getting killed at the track.
This particular photo was taken by my mom in the semi's. There were 3-cars left....Jim's 57, dad's 55, and a barracuda (early 60's), Dad could not remember who owned the barracuda. We out ran Jim's 57 and while the barracuda got the bye. We then out ran the barracuda in the final. I was only 8-9 yrs old at the time, but I do remember the excitement on the trip back home!! Troy Dennis was driving dad's 55 (Mr. Ed jr.) at the time. Ed jr. was a 55 business coupe with the 195 hp motor and 3-speed. Dad sold the car around 69 when he built a 56 sedan delivery with the dual 4-barrel setup. Ed McLawhorn Jr. |
