Rory, I don't think it was the 302 deal in itself that causes the big stir. I think it was the scope of the deal. Think of all of the years and body styles that got to take advantage of that one "swipe-of-a-pen". The LT-1 deal affected a few Camaros and (now) Novas. The 440/375 deal affected more years and body styles but not like the 302s.
Imagine the NHRA suddenly putting all of the mid '70s 2V 350 Chevys at 165 HP.
