Definitely some engine changes for those cars in that year range. Early ones had the aluminum intake manifold with forward facing throttle body, later had a plastic intake with throttle body facing the driver side. I believe the plastic lower intake on the later ones is the same as Mustang with just the aluminum upper elbow being different to point to the opposite side. Both intakes are pretty restrictive. The plastic one also always cracked and leaked water, I don't think the updated part number with the aluminum water crossover is in the engine specs, would need to go through the process of getting that approved. There should be a cylinder head change somewhere in that year range, the ports got straighter at some point, I think around 96.
