There are some ladders where it is possible for some qualifiers to have the opportunity to get 3 bye runs.

It is possible to modify sportsman ladders so that there are no double or triple bye runs, but the NHRA was not interested in changing. Double and triple byes have only recently become a noticeable issue because there are no longer full fields. The smaller the field size, the more likely you are to have a double or triple bye run.
