The 85 had a roller cam where as the previous two years did not. If NHRA would allow this combo to run as an automatic, I would run my car in L/SA. I tried to run it with the factory CFI for a few years with no success. That is why I decided to put a crate motor in it.

I also run a carbed 85 Mustang in M&N/Stock. I too am suprised at this HP adjustment, Out of the 4 or 5 of us than run this combo, other than Summers convert, we are all struggling to go 1 sec. under (my best is .83 under) I thought than NHRA normally factored the engine AND the body in question. If so, shouldn`t only a convertable get hit? Like Eric said, 1/2 second of index for less than 250 lbs seems a bit generous.
As for the 83&84 Mustangs 5.0`s, the E5 heads the 85`s use are no better than the D8`s the 78-84 Mustangs use, the only difference is the bottom of the intake side of the casting is clearanced to allow the hyd. roller lifters to be removed without removing the heads. Same ports, valves, chamber volume. The pistons are also the same, although the 83 can have the piston sticking .013" above the deck, 85 is zero. The 84 & 85 use the same intake manifold, the 83 is the same other than the EGR passage.The 83-4 cam is a flat hydraulic, with less int. lift, but a bit more exh. lift. Other than the hyd. roller cam, the other "big news" for the 85 Mustang was the factory "tube headers", compared to the cast iron manifolds on the earlier 302`s, which is of no consequence on a Stocker anyways. As far as I know, the 82 HO 2 barrel, as well as the 83-84 4 barrel Mustang engines were all "stick only". If you wanted an automatic, you had to run the CFI set up.
