I think I would look at getting a CDL on a state by state basis.Don't know all the rules, but having a cdl for the last 30 years I know a couple.
If you are pulled over by the dot you will be expected to know all propers when doing a level 1-2 -3 inspection. Pre trip/post trip/ air brake test etc.No more going to traffic school to erase a speeding ticket.Not valid for cdl holders.For you drinkers blood alcohol is lowered for cdl holders. Officer can be a little more "picky" on inspections and on the fact of "for hire"
Need to check with your own state on "intra V. inter" state trips.Will a log book be required? If so 11hrs driving in a 14 hr period.
As John say's so many gray areas, I would consider state by state.
Also:
you are held to CDL standards regardless of what you are driving.i.e. semi or car
