Re: Detroit 4-71 run away
Saw/heard a couple of 6v53's run away. The screech sends tingles down your spine! One, the guy threw his parka into the airhorn and it ate it in about 3 seconds!( it has a fine screen between it and the blower so I don't know how, but it did) Pulled the fuel quick disconnects and it ran on the engine oil with a clipboard sucked tight on the airhorn for a minute or so then died. Another ran away and the cpl working on it was running around not sure what to do and it ran screeching for a good 5 minutes while more and more people came to see what the racket was. Finally a snuff board was found and killed it but the motor was rattling/knocking bad and had to be replaced.
These were in APC's when I was with the engineers in Germany.
Pulled into service battalion in Petawawa one day just as they were cleaning up from a run away 8v71 that was in a M-109. There were parts scattered all over the shop and oil dripping from the rafters! Don't remember the details, just the mess.
It kills me to see or hear something being destroyed though, that's why I won't even watch a video of "engine blows on dyno" or "wide open contest" or whatever. If it's an accident, then hopefully the guy who messed up learned his lesson. But morons who blow things up for the fun of carnage and destruction deserve a tiny corner of hell in my opinion. And no, I don't go to demolition derby's, as a kid I saw too many "good" cars destroyed for no reason. I even tried to buy a 73 mustang as-is before a demo derby started, the asshole was some braindead non automotive type guy who wanted to smash something. Didn't matter if it was a mustang or a pinto or a ferrari, he just wanted to smash something and wouldn't sell. I left because i couldn't watch and have never been to one since.
Can you tell I'm a little touchy about it? LOL
