I look at the difference in the dial in, depending on how much time between the two cars depends on how close I zoom in to the car with the slower ET. This is the biggest reason I do this freehand then with a tripod, although the tripod keeps a steadier shot, you lose the ability to zoom in and out so the picture is too far away and you don't see the cars as well. I tried a monopod but then the angles are wrong. I'm a sucker for wheelstands, so if it is a big stick, I follow that car regardless.
