Probably saves about 5 to 10 minutes on the drive. Good luck, wish I would find out I could go back this year. Go to Expedia and search for motels, they will have a lot to choose from around Indy.
That is Hwy 421, also called Michigan road. I have stayed at this exit, 421 and I-465, on either side of the road atleast 30 times between the Nats and the Div 3 race. Rates are reasonable and places to eat that are close. The shortcut you refer to is 38th street, goes past Eagle Creek Airport and it changes names to Girls School road? and that runs you to Crawfordsville road. Go west and you are at the track in three minutes.
