Re: Bobby Warren on TV
I saw the brown W&R Nova at the first SummerNationals and that was at York Dragway in 1970 I thought it had a black vinyl top but I think that was when George Cureton had it. At the Summer's that year, 1970....I raced a '68 Chevy II with my partner. It was a 350/295 high compression engine. Bobby's Nova was a '69 and had the 350/255 We had nothing but trouble at that event and never qualified. We had run 12.20's out there in the spring but in the summer heat we struggled and never made a decent run. Bobby went 12.29 if I remenber right in J/S and I will never forget thinking how the heck did he go that fast with a low compression engine in 80 to 90 degree weather...
I always respected the southern Div 2 racers a lot as I felt they knew how to run in the heat of the summer since they dealt with the hot weather more than us northerners.....We ran good in cool weather but they ran good even in the heat and that was not easy especially on 7" tires and pavement......We did not have concrete or traction compound treated tracks.....
I think of many cars when I think of Bobby Warren.....probably the '69 Crunchy Chicken car more than any other.......he won the grace Cup I think with that ride. That was a big deal back then....
