Default Re: Battery

I had been using Optima red top batteries for the last few years, but after a couple that didn't seem up to par I decided to try something different. So, I switched this year to the XS Power S1200 from Powermaster, and so far so good. It's a little smaller and lighter than the Optima, and according to the specs has slightly less cranking amps and reserve capacity (I run a 12V system with an alternator). But, if the outside construction is any indication of the quality of the internals, this thing is going to last (it really is a nice piece, and clearly built for racing).

I also decided to invest in a good automatic battery charger (one with logic that monitors the battery voltage and automatically shuts off when it is time). Overcharging of the battery leads to outgassing which significantly reduces the lifetime of AGM batteries. Schumacher Electric makes a couple that can be purchased for under $100.
