Champions were crowned at the 5th event in the 2009 North Central Division championship chase. After a long and trying day on Saturday, the racers attacked the track and put on a great show for the fans in attendance. Defending North Central Division Top Alcohol Dragster champion Marty Thacker continues his great history at National Trail Raceway as he scored another hard fought win, this one over Ken Perry. Chris Foster made the Top Alcohol Funny Car winner circle with his win over Andy Bohl in their final round matchup. Other winners included Bruno Massel (Competiton eliminator), Gene McBean (Super Stock), Jason McCormack (Stock), James Antonette Sr (Super Comp), Larry Bernshausen (Super Gas), Josh Van Horne (Super Street), Rick Forish (Top Dragster), and Tommy Turner (Top Sportsman).
Fron the #4 spot in the field, Thacker's Robinson, Illinois 2009 Spitzer blown dragster started off by defeating the Lucas Oil champion Bill Reichert in round one and Brian Mans in round two to advance to the final round. Richmond Hill, Ontario's Perry drove his 2004 Hadman blown dragster to wins over Denny Hummel and Robin Samsel to get to the final round. There, Thacker cut a perfect .000 reaction time and won the race on a holeshot 5.43 to a 5.40. Former NHRA Funny Car and Top Fuel driver Tommy Johnson Jr. qualified Bill Evans' A-Fuel dragster in the #6 spot before losing to Samsel in the opening round.
After qualifying on the pole in Alcohol Funny Car, Foster's Davenport, Iowa entry won rounds over Tim Stevens, and Bobby Martin to reach the final round. Bohl's 2007 Mustang bodied entry stopped Brian Harvanek and Tony Bartone to set up the final round matchup. There, Foster got the advantage at the stripe, and his 2007 Monte Carlo won with a 5.74 elapsed time to Bohl's game 5.76.
