Slick Recommendation for stick car

We are trying to get a car set up this year and having a lot of difficulty with traction. 69 Camaro, 427, Jerico. Working with Calvert to ensure that was all correct and they said the tires are shot (20 runs) and to get a stiffer sidewall and harder compound. Tires are Hoosier 29x9 D06

I don't see any stiff sidewall tires in 9 inch on the Hoosier site. Mickey Thompson has a 29.5x9 (3056ST) which says it is recommended for manual transmissions. The MT site also calls out a different stiff sidewall tire for cars over 3,000 lbs (3360), but do not have it in a 9" tire.

What are others running for tires with a stick?

The guys I would ask are Brett McFarland, Ed Bednaz and Bob Broadbent.

Best tire I've found for best traction and longevity is the Hoosier 18200 30x9 D07. Usually get 80-100 runs before they go away. I've run the M/T tire and as far as I'm concerned they're not a good tire as I could never get more than 25 runs on then. Clutch settings and shock settings are also a factor plus tire pressure and launch RPM. A racepak can't hurt as well.

The MT 3056st is fine but I would recommend tubes in any of them running. A heavy stick car.

What clutch are you running and what shocks? Everything has to work together. If you are hammering the tire with the clutch there is no tire that can overcome that unless conditions are perfect.

We have a McLeod soft lok. Front has dual adjustable shocks. Springs and shocks are fast from Randy Mans. Rear is all caltracs with their 9 way shocks. We were suspecting the rear shock, but have been working directly with them (great customer service btw). After going through a lot of stuff we started looking at the tires.

We have been from 380-800 lbs on base and 9.7/11.8/13.2 on the levers as we have tried to work through. From 3800-5000 on launch RPM. Front shocks on the loose end of rebound and the rear on the stiff end. Various combinations of the above.

I have tried many, but Mickey Thompson has a 29.5x9 (3056ST) works for my 302, 5-speed.

All of that can work, but it kind of depends on your expectations. If you are really looking to go fast, and the basic car and engine are optimized, better double adjustable rear shocks and a more modern, smaller and lighter clutch could really help. I use advanced clutches from Rob Youngblood, but there are similar ones that are much lighter and more efficient than an older style soft lock. A bigger clutch like that has a bigger tuning window so they are a great clutch to start with, just know there are options if you want to go faster.

Another vote for Hoosier 18200, D07

Those Hoosier 18200 D07's are my personal all around favorite bias tire. The stiff wall Mickey is also very good and have had success with it.

Do you have Racepak with a clutch input sensor installed? That's your most important tuning tool with a clutch car. If you have any videos or data logs I'm happy to check them out.
