Weather Station
Any opinions on the Kestrel (orange) 4000 weather station. It looks to have all the features you need for 239.00. I know there are other(more expensive options) out there. Thanks.
Ed Carpenter 66 Chevy II 4244 SS/I PS Jeff (Mr. Lee) I'm going testing on Jan 26 (weather permitting). Any progress on yours? |

Ed -
Kestrel is one of our sponsors and we love it. It is fantastic. We also have the computer program that allows us to download the information to the computer. The only thing that it does not do is ET prediction, but you will have more actual weather info than you will know what to do with. It is well worth the money... If you will let them know that you spoke to Waibel Competition and they were recommended highly. Waibel Competition |
Re: Weather Station
We also sell them. You can pick one up right now brand new for $239 from us.

Re: Weather Station
Is there anybody out there that actually uses thes in competition that can comment ???
There has to be something besides a salesman's sales pitch.........:-) |

Re: Weather Station
I used one last year. It worked very well and was very convenient to use. Once you set up the display you can get the information you want very quickly. It does not predict performance, but it is very useful if you can dial your car off of the weather conditions.

Re: Weather Station
In 15 years I have never commented on a forum to try to promote or argue about any of my products and I am not going to start now.
But I feel that it is important to bring something to the attention of the racers so they can make a more educated decision. Certain cheaper priced handheld devices are not licensed by my patent and calculate a standard aviation "textbook" Density Altitude. These units are made for various uses such as hiking, mountain climbing, biking, etc and work great for that. Internal combustion engines do not care about the true density of the air. Racers are not trying to calculate how much lift can be generated on the wing of an airplane, they are trying to determine the effect the available atmosphere will have on the performance of a motor. Engines burn OXYGEN with fuel. The "density altitude" and correction factors calculated in a racing weather stations measure available OXYGEN and WATER content. Water content contributes to the air's density or weight, but does not add to the performance, and can adversely effect performance. These differences may be subtle, especially when the atmosphere changes slightly, but then again, how many times have you lost by less then 0.01? So before purchasing something that is not designed for you application you might more wisely spend a little more and get something that will work for you. Re: Weather Station
I use the 4000 and love it. It is a measuring device, not a prediction device. I do that myself. Like Fred says, if you use it for a while you will see that given a DA and a high humidity, you will be slower than the same DA with lower humidity. It's not that your (gasoline) engine is overly sensitive to humidity, it's that the DA is not a perfect statistic for racing. In fact, no one statistic is perfect.
