Oldsmobile people chime in
Looking for some info. Perked some interest in a cutlass stocker. It is a BIW car, former Ray Head car. It has the 307 olds engine in it, 87/88 combo. Is that combo any good? I tried the 305 chevy combo in a malibu and it is SUPER expensive to get halfway competitive. Is the 307 any better. This car hasn't been raced in a long time as far as I can find. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Oldsmobile people chime in
It’s a very cool car and probably worth the effort of updating, but remember one thing that I noticed because I was also interested in this car, I’m pretty sure it’s a K,L,M combo, I could be wrong, but it doesn’t have a roll bar. The only way to race it immediately is put a bar in it because I dont think it will fit into N/SA….

I think Dave Irvan in Cottonwood Az raced a 307/138 in P. He blew it up pretty good and is building a 305 now. He feels its better and easier then the 307.
I also run the 307 as a 88 but in a Custom Cruiser wagon. First attempt I was 34 under. Redoing everything on motor as it was my fist time building one and made a couple hundred mistakes. |
Re: Oldsmobile people chime in
He says its a flat tappet engine. Looks like 87 combo, JKL. He doesn't know what it runs and thats what I am trying to find out. 18k is steep for what could be a around 8-10k in updating

Roller cam combo..The only way to go.
Tough, dependable engine. Danny Lattimore did the engine for the one from NH. I did a couple converters for it, and consulted on the T 200 trans. Been running good for YEARS..Hasn't slowed down yet. Jeff, Give Dave a kick in the butt and tell him it's from me. I don't see those flat tappet deals being a player in J,K,L |
Re: Oldsmobile people chime in
Hi Bill Prince here, I had an 87 factory olds with factory T tops, my class was IJK. As an 88 with T tops it ran KLM. In the hydraulic cam is faster than a roller cam. In 2005 we went 1180 with it at 100mph shutting if off, winning class in Topeka. I went much quicker than that doing testing. In bracket modes 1170. Call me at 763-443-7428 in the daytime.

Re: Oldsmobile people chime in
We ran the 307 roller 88 model P/SA ran 12.50's in bracket mode.
I think 18 is a bit much but the car did belong to Ray Head who was an ICON in Stock Eliminator |
