VP C12 in a metal gas can
 

Was thinking of buying a five gallon Class 1 metal safety gas can as they are DOT approved. Am using C12 and wonder if that could affect C12 in a fuel check. Those gas cans are galvanized and could it affect C12? I do have plastic fuel jugs, but those are not DOT rated, let alone some not even rated for fuel. VP comes in 5 gal metal cans, but is not a safety container. Thanks, just curious.

C12 is pretty stable fuel. Keeping it in original VP can sealed it will stay good over a year.

I realize that the plastic jugs that pretty much everyone uses might not be DOT approved but if they are a problem for storing fuel, the world is in a world of hurt, we should be having explosions on a daily basis as there are thousands of them out there.

A lot of us buy our fuel in 55 gallon barrels and transport what we need per race. I have been transporting multiple 5 gallon containers in VP plastic jugs for years. Some transport the barrel. I would keep it in the 5 gallon pale it came in.

Not worried about explosions and the like, I would use it to store fuel in my trailer going to events. Just would like it in a metal container in case of an issue while towing. Nothing against plastic fuel jugs, that was not my intent. I own some like every other racer.

Same with me, I have a 55 gallon drum of C16, transfer what I need for the race into plastic jugs. As leaving fuel in the heat and/or sunlight, I transfer the fuel back into the barrel (which is kept in a cool area) when I get home. Don't keep race fuel in your trailer between races as it can get crazy hot in an enclosed trailer baking in the sun. For the record, C12 is probably OK longer term but C16 degrades pretty quickly so I never keep it more than 1 year, I learned that lesson the hard and expensive way.

Dont pull out the funnel type opening on 5 Gallon cans. If lifted a few times they will crack and will not keep fuel in good shape

I don`t know if they still do this, but several years ago, at a NHRA National Event, I took 2 of my old 5 gallon VP cans to the VP trailer to fill them up, and they removed the old opening/funnel metal rings, and installed new ones.

When the fuel depot in Pasco still carried VP, not long ago, they did this on a few cans that I had.
