Trailer Tire Issues

Trailer is a Featherlight
Race Car weighs 4100 to 4300 lb.
Depending on load of gas and some stuff in trunk.

Trailer weighs 1550 lbs + 50lbs Straps and Stuff
Total weight Range = 5700 to 5900 lbs.
Tow with 94 Caprice wagon, Plenty of torque.
Suspension beefed with rear roll bar, better springs, airbags.

Owned the trailer 5 years
Originals were Loadstar and shortly needed replacing.
Replaced with three sets of Loadstars 205/75/15 each Summer.
Three blow outs and rest became distorted with chord bulges.
They do not like hot Summer weather.
Last set had bubbles on the inside of the tire.

These tires are Rated for 65-70mph and rarely go over 65mph.
Pass rarely though pushed briefly to 70-75mph.
Loadstar recommended 5 Lbs air pressure above factory rating (60psi)

C&C Trailer said they had little problem with the tire.
But had to replace a few.

C&C this time upgraded the trailer with Champion 225/75/15 8 ply.
Fifth set of tires are slightly taller tire and it drives smoother.
They have a higher rating of 2850lbs per tire.

Has anyone had issues with Loadstar or other Brand?

One day may upgrade to an Enclosed trailer.
What issues are you all having?
All wisdom on the topic is helpful.

This 15 inch trailer tire issue has been beaten to death. The load range on the tire is the important part. Load range d will not work. Load range e is much better and I had no trouble with the set of load range I just took off because of age. But there are now load range F 15 trailer tires that are really beefy and heavy and should cure these problems. I probably went thru 20 load range d’s, Goodyear even warranted some. F is the way to go. When see one you see what I’m talking about!

Is it always a front or rear pair? Unbalanced load will do it. Had trouble with the fronts getting ruined. Moved car back some and balanced the weight better. Minimum E rating

We had tire issues also. We had 6 lug 15" rims, we upgraded to 6 lug16"rims and was able to have a better selection of better rated tires that might help it worked for us on one of our trailers. Kenney

I brought over the comments from Painter to C&C.
After a short conversation
Most of their customer base drives local and had fewer failures.
Drive about 50 miles a day with some highway travel.
Farm trailers, equipment hauler, lawn care, local business needs.

The tire failures are reminiscent of the Firestone steel belted radial tire.
They broke, burst, chord failure most from high speed and in summer.

The last set on my trailer one rear was badly deformed
Rest All had decided deformation. 3 tires with blisters inside the tire.
Never heard of that before.

C&C has a call into Loadstar to get a refund.
Didn’t have more than 5000 miles on the set.

Jeff...fwiw the trailer looks more level with the taller 225’s.
Going to measure at Atco tomorrow where the surface is level.

The 225s have a much higher load rating than 205s.
E or F are much safer/better.
16s are much better if they will fit under fenders.
Pay attention to Date code on sidewalls.
Do not buy a 2 or 3 years old new tire!

I also recommend load range E and higher. I also recommend buying a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. I've used one for more than 5 years and it has saved me from a blowout when I've had issues with valve stems leaking, etc. It will also help you with load distribution issues by showing the different tire pressures while driving. It's not uncommon for my 80 psi tires to get to 90+ in the summer. Sure helps peace of mind, especially after having tire issues.

You need to consider tire covers to keep the sun off the tires. It will greatly extend the life of your trailers tires, of course that is provided you park your trailer outside.

If I was you, I would DEFINITELY go with GOODYEAR. .....

Many of us have had issues with Goodyear trailer tires in the past.

That being said from what I hear their newest trailer tire is pretty good.

However when you go to an enclosed trailer I would not get one without 16 inch tires. I wish I had!
