Did You Get Screwed?
It has come to my attention that there was at least one, maybe more competitors who ran the 1976 360 (Volare, Aspen) combo at Indy this year who were DQed for having a smaller primary (1 3/8) Thermo Quad than tech said they should have. In previous tech info printed on the NHRA Tech site it stated you could run either the 1 3/8' or the 1.50' primary TQ carbs as both carbs numbers were listed as original equipment. Apparently these tech sheets have been re done and the small primary carb was left off the list but the Carburetor OEM numbers are still there.
I have been building these TQ carbs for Stock and Super Stockers for more than 40 years and Both carbs are and have been listed in several 360 combos and are both listed as OEM for those combos. If you were one of those who were DQed for this reason please contact me so I can verify this with NHRA Tech. I plan on following up this mistake with NHRA and will keep you informed on how this turns out. If this has happened, I'm not sure what can be done to compensate those affected but either way, this needs to be addressed. Jim jimwahl@embarqmail.com . |
Re: Did You Get Screwed?
I understand it was Wesley who was DQing racers for this. I was NOT there and this was reported to me by someone who WAS there.
No matter what. This misprint needs to be corrected before others are affected by it! It can be varified by Carter and several places including Chrysler MoPar Parts listings. Jim . |
Re: Did You Get Screwed?
There were 3 DQ s in Stock at INDY, none were dismissed because of a TQ violation....

Re: Did You Get Screwed?
To my knowledge no 360 ever had the small carb from the factory.

Re: Did You Get Screwed?
The '78 Aspen wagon 360/160hp has had both sizes listed in the tech sheets. One reason I liked it was because it provided more options and bettered the odds of getting a good core. But many of the later 360-4 specs are blanketed with a 289 HP factor anyway, regardless of cam size or carb size!

Example: If you look up the 1976 Volare with the 360 engine in the NHRA blueprint guide, it will list 5 TQ numbers accepted by NHRA. The first two of these are small primary carbs and the other three are large primary carbs. . |
Re: Did You Get Screwed?
Jim is right.....Both small and big carbs have been legal on that combo
for as long as I can remember. However, I never find ANY Difference in performance on a 360 between the big and small carb. We have set the National Record a few years back with a 360 combo and the carbs varied more one to another without consideration of size of primary. |
Re: Did You Get Screwed?
We run a 1980 Volare 360 combo.
It has a small bore TQ on it, by the carb number, it's for a 1974 360. Got torn down this year, carb was checked & found legal. |
Re: Did You Get Screwed?
