Are drag racers really crazy?

"We spend an awful lot of money on our “hobby.” We all know that, maybe too much at times. And I’ve been as guilty as anyone. I’ll often look at the purse of a race and I’ve advised others to do the same. But is that really the right thing to do?"

Well I don't know if drag racers are crazy, but for me, a person that grew up with an immense love for something I could only see in a magazine or the rare occasion on TV and no hope of racing, I don't care if I ever earn $.01 in a drag race... It's worth way more than any payout to me!

Well said Todd, I grew up at the track watching some great men like Bobby Warren, Garley Daniels and Bud Rowe just to name a few. So for me I'm living out what waa at one time just a dream. Doesn't get any better than that!

If drag racers are crazy, I guess that makes me crazy too. I was 15 years old when I first went to a drag strip named Dover in Wingdale, NY, and I was instantly addicted to drag racing. It is a sport that assaults all of your senses; there is nothing else even remotely like it. I am 72 now and still just as addicted as I was then and loving every minute of it! I'll see a lot of you guys at Indy in a couple of weeks; can hardly wait!

X tech. Why are you always so negative. We all know you don’t like NHRA. This is an NHRA class racing forum. It gets old seeing your negativity in many of these posts. I really don’t understand why you participate on this forum. I still like racing at the NHRA events

Because the NHRA does not care about the little guy any more. It was pretty good back in the 1970's. The entry fees are horrible today. All they want is a filler for top fool and fuel ha ha cars. I raced in your class back in 1978 with a 1968 SS/IA Camaro when the battery had to be in the front stock location and the water pump was driven by the balancer. No ported heads, etc. It was good times. The entry fees' for the sports nationals AND the Gainesville Gator Nationals was $40 each. Now I realize the entries had to increase from the stone age but damn that $40 included a pit crew also. It was NOT extra. I got class runner up to Phil Hardee who was a customer of Bobby warren at the sports Nationals. I felt pretty good getting beat by only .03 considering I built every part of that Camaro. I did heads for a ton of other stocker guys who held records back the 1970's but times change. Why do you think the porting became allowed in S/S......BECAUSE the NHRA could not tech the games that were being played. Now its happening in the stockers with a lot of them grinding the ports and valve pockets then hiding the mods with acid etching and blasting with a course media like "Black Beauty" since before 1985 ! Then NHRA changed the valve pocket rules a couple of years or more ago. I dislike the way NHRA has become over the last few years. I hope the new digitizing deal puts some guys back where they belong. To much cheating has been going on for years. You like what you like and I will like what I like.

Good Post!!

I think my first race with my car was in the fall of 1978. Same car as I race today. Started in C/SM from a few years them moved to Super Stock. And have been there ever since. I only have a few gripes. Quota is one and the other is just the schedules for National and divisionals. Now our races are during the work week and we have to take time off of work to participate. Back when I started the division races were Saturday and Sunday only. Payout surly needs to catch up with the times as well. But you have to get to the late rounds to get some of that anyway.
