1968 pontiac GTO stocker
 

I have a question for the Pontiac guys here. Is a 1968 GTO with a 350hp 400cid with a THM 400 worth building into a D/SA or E/SA car. I dont have any experience with stockers, but I am very aware of the fact that some combinations are not worth building. I have built some decent cars in the past and raced, but I know that stockers are a different cup of tea. I figure that a great deal of research is a good idea. I dont want to waste my time, and If this combo wouldnt work out, I will just keep researching until I can find something worthwhile. I have an open mind and I am not set on building this combo. I am wanting to go with something that has a chance of being competitive and will work out for the long term, so I am not in a big hurry, I want to do things right . If this combo would work out, that would be great because I allready have a 1968 GTO with this engine trans combo. Any information or inputs greatly appreciated.

I agree with Real Racer, get in touch with Tim, he runs fast and has a similar combo..He's a very good Pontiac Man and lots of info he can help you...He lives in Div 3.......LOL Dave...1033/stock(350)

chupiw if I looked @ the guide right it's a natural F car add weight to G lighten to E. I think it would be an ok combo...tim runs pretty fast with it.....I don't think your going to want to run a 400 turbo trans though!

chupiw you may also want to talk to jon wacholtz in austin minnisota he has had many gto stockers and could be very helpful. his current car i beleive is an e/sa lemans with a 455 that runs low 11,s.
you can also talk to my engine builder jeff stealy at stealy performance in moline ill. he does both mine and jons motors and knows how to get the most out of a pontiac. i personaly would use the gto anybody can be competitive if you work hard at it but its even more cool when you can do it with something different. good luck

I don't know wahat area you are from, but Don Turk from Indiana, # 73 qualifier at Martin, MI, has a '68 Goat. Not fast, but may have some advice.

Truman Fields has a wealth of knowledge and experience with Pontiacs. But he's been on the road out west.

Thanks for the information guys, I really appreciate it. I checked out tim gillespie's times, and I would be pretty happy with similar results. Looks like he has a pretty nice car. Mine has been setting for a few years, and I need to do it justice and start working on it.

Tim also has a Super-Gas car....good looking car too.chupiw where do you live? I'm sure tim will be @ the nothernsports nationals next weekend (sep 30) you could come by and ask all kinds of questions. LOL if your not on this side of the country I'm sure some one can get his # for ya.

Call your GTO a 1969 model. Then go look at the specs between a RAIII and RAIV. Then go look at the HP differences between the two engines...;)
Maybe the 400/350 1968 engine will still be a better choice. It would be cheaper and lighter...
-722 RAIV heads & the aluminum hi-rise are on ebay often.

I am in Phoenix AZ. Been here for 12 years.In about 6 to 8 months I will be going to Texas and pick the GTO up. It has been sitting in storage for 13 years. So from now on I will be learning and getting as much information as possible to make this build go a little smoother. I am glad I found this forum, I think it will be a lot of help. Thanks for the info, I will be getting in touch with tim soon, I found his website last night.
