Is a Rack& Pinion allowed in SS modified classes??
I have a 71 Maverick that I'd like to campain in SS/BM
It still has the original upper an lower control arms ,shock towers , but we have replaced the steering gear with a rack and pinion.......Is this legal or not ??????I'm getting some conflicting info on this .....Called IHRA tech , they say no problem , then called NHRA and they said shouldn't be a problem but was'nt 100% sure , so he said he'd look into it but I hav'nt heard back yet IHRA stated " It's OK for the SS modiified classes only "......any comments ? Thanks, Len , Lentech Automatics |

Good question, considering that I see later model year Camaros and Firebirds using Ford Pinto racks in STOCK, it would be interesting to see them deny a Ford rack in a Ford car in S/S, wouldn`t you think?

Greg, you are exactly correct. If the car had a rack it can be replaced with a manual rack. If the car had a conventional steering box, it has to keep it.
This was discussed when the truck program came along: ie S-10's with a steering box and Dodge trucks with a rack. Ask any reputable chassis builder. FJ |
Re: Is a Rack& Pinion allowed in SS modified classes??
The rules allow you to convert to rack and pinion steering in modified. I recently went through this while building a ss modified car in 2005. Travis Miller (NHRA tech Division 3) supervised the build and we contacted NHRA tech. The rulebook then specifiically stated it. In the 2007 rule book it states for RWD a "NHRA accepted front suspension" They accepted it.
