16 volt systems
This is a question for my son's car and not for my stocker. Can anyone advise me on how guys are using the 16 volt battery systems? Does he need a special starter or ignition system? He runs two batteries so he could separate the gauges, etc. if necessary.

Re: 16 volt systems
Most newer race components have been designed to be run at 16 volts .
The one exception might be electric radiator fans . ......Most are designed primarily for street use . I've seen a few cars that have had fan motor failures . ...a dropping resister or module takes care of the problem . |
Re: 16 volt systems
Be careful charging it. 16 volt chargers put out almost 20 volts ... That WILL burn things up if you leave your kill switch on. We burnt up a MSD box and when repaired I called and ask why ? Technician said "The 18 volt threshold had been reached"......

Maybe these will go another year. This DSR charger supposedly goes into a "maintainer" mode. Hope it does. |
Re: 16 volt systems
One thing to consider about a 16 volt setup is availability. You need a backup plan.
My son manages an Interstate Battery dealership and they can get, but do not stock 16 volt batteries. It is not usual for him to get a desperate call from a racer whose 16 volt battery has failed, they need one to go to the races and cannot find one locally. Bill. |
