BBC Main Studs

Found a 0.030 over 454 2-bolt block with ARP main studs already installed. The studs are hard to turn out and I thought ARP says to install them hand tight into the block without bottoming them and not use loctite or anything to hold them in. So my question is will those studs being installed like that a problem or should we just check the crank bore alignment? Thanks ahead of time guys.

Very possibly loctite red 277. you will see it on the threads once you undo one. Luke SS 311

The newer stud kits are bullet nosed on the bottom so that bottom out. The old ones I just put them in finger tight.

How would you check crank bore alignment ??

If those were installed the block should be align honed as the instructions say.

Honestly Carl I would put my faith in the shop that will check the block for cracking to check the align bore condition. Do you feel the studs being hard to turn out is a problem?

I try to snag every 454 that comes my way but lately there is more and more junk being put out for sale. Guess they are getting scarce.

No not really they may have been loctited in place at one time.

Only way to check alignment is to run a line hone through the mains as that don't lie.

Biggest problem I see wit old 454 block is worn out lifter and guys try to put roller lifters in worn out bores it does not take much time to ruin a set of lifters. Other problem is the lifter bores are to short . I bush them and in most cases go to .904 and leave the bushing appox. .250 higher then the casting.

ARP catalog says to install finger tight with loctite, then install the caps before the loctite dries.
