Delay Box in SS

Has a delay box ever been legal in superstock, either NHRA or IHRA? And if so, when?

To my limited knowledge, I don't they have ever been legal.

YES

Chris,

They were legal in 1988 in Superstock. I had one, and my worst light in 23 runs when the car hooked was an .021 sec (.521 in those days). That was after I'd put another hun in it because the .00?'s were too close to red. They then took them away in 1989, and everyone else must have been lost without theirs, because I won the Division in '89, and I didn't think I drove that well.

Believe me, a delay box may not change the winners as those guys are good, but it certainly would make a difference in who got to the later rounds.

Don't know if this is a coincidence or what, but in the 2 page "Racer's Scrapbook", the photo history of Jeff Taylor mentiones them using a delay box in SS in 1988 when it was legal, or, at least, not outlined that it wasn't.

In Ihra,,I think they were legal more than one year,,,If Im not mistaken,,one year they even had co-champions in SS,,,,one was for delay and one was for non-delay,,,,,I THINK the 2 champs were Harold charles (one of the best to ever drive) and another very good racer ,,,Danny ray Shortridge SR........

My opinion. In SuperStock ,where the rules allow trans brakes, the sanctioning bodies should allow delay boxes. In Stock there should be no 2 steps, (not even for stick cars), no buttons of any kind, and should be only footbraking allowed.

Chris, they are still legal. They just aren't electronic any more. They are now mechanical or hydraulic over mechanical. They've managed to make them very small as well, some people say they look like a trans brake switch, but most of us think they still look like a delay box.

Jeff, Just curious. Did you ever race a stickshift car? Do you remember the five amber tree? Do you think we could have it back if your plan were implemented?

Not sure if anyone ever had one, but Ed Obrien sure could use one. Someone had to say it!
