1997 Grand Am

I have a chance to buy a 1997 Grand Am for $200. 2.4 dohc 4 cylinder, owners mech. says no compression. Car still runs, I'm thinking sloppy belt< slipped tooth, tensioner worn out. Anybody ever work on/seen this type of problem with this motor? Unfort. this motor/body combo is not legal in stock.
