283 super stock hp
 

A buddy of mine bought a 283 ss motor that last ran with old indx. What hp should it make to run todays indx.Car is 66 nova ...wt.2850...pg.211 low gear.. 620 rear... 7in con. We have a dyno to use.What about headers.The ones we have are from old motor...327 ss/ha... just a little big... Heads are old school .Do you guys think that combo might work

What is the hp rating? 195/195 or 220/235?

The reg NHRA SS hp is at 236 in a nova HT auto which puts into natural SS/JA at 11.99 weight per hp,but if you badge it as a SS option its weight per hp becomes 12.06 or a natural SS/KA. Remember you can move up or down a class from its natural class by changing weight 236 lbs in this case. Min weight for J 2770, 3000 K, and if a Super Sport 3240 for L. SS/GT would be a better option with a 233 hp rating, You could run GT/LA which is a 13.5 hp class GT/KA a 13lb class GT/JA is 12.5 and GT/IA at 12lbs. Just take the class weight times 233 plus 170 lbs for the driver and round off for your min weight. IHRA is 230 hp. Most run a step header 1 5/8 1 3/4 1 7/8. The 6.20 gear will work along with 9" stocker tires on 10" rims it will turn 9000 plus in the lites. Tom

Been told my several the really quick 283's are pushing 500hp or more. Tom Meyer is dead on with hp ratings, classes. He helped me tremendously with my budget 283 ss build.

ss/ka around 417hp to run index 11.25, 550hp to run 1 second under index 10.25. Wade Owens M/SA record 11.65 in good air around 400 hp. Tom

510 on my car to go high 10.40s in SS/LA in good air, that would be .95 under now. At that time had a 1.98 glide in the car, don't know how much faster it would be with a three speed. I could be wrong but 550 hp out of 220 hp 283 would not be possible at this time. Also back in the day it took 6 hp to go a tenth faster. But the faster you go the more power you would need to push the brick shape of a shoe box Chevy II down the track. Tom

I don't think Tim or Robin even make 550 and they can run in the .80's.
