Crank for SBF SS/GT?
 

There seems to be a distortion field between the NHRA rulebook and the Accepted Products guide that either encourages cheating or discourages racing, I'm not sure which.

I was going to go with an Eagle or Scat rotating assembly to build the 302 for my SSGT 68 Mustang but I wasn't sure all the parts they included fit the NHRA specs so I'm going to put it together myself. Pistons I can figure out, Flat top with two notches that don't increase stock compression. OK. Rods. 5.090, no fancy stuff to make them light. OK.

Here's the problem: The rules state OEM or NHRA approved crank only for SS, which carries over to SSGT. When I go to the Approved Products guide, there is a grand total of ONE crank to pick from on a document titled Stock Eliminator Approved Cranks. Is every SBF in SS out there running this crank or am I missing something?

Me thinks I'm missing something...

My instinct tells me I can run any crank with the following dimensions as long as it isn't under stock weight or had voodoo specifically lined out in the rules done to it.

3.00 Stroke
Rod bearing journal: 2.123
Main bearing journal: 2.249

Dale, you need to submit to NHRA the crank you want to use. Might not have to give them a crank, possible a link to the info about it. Talk to your div tech director about it. He can give you the name & number you need to contact.
Those approved parts are listed there because somebody (racer or mfgr) submited them for approval.

Do I use the Crank Approval form for Stock Elim from NHRARacer? My tech doesn't always get back to me.

This should help you understand the "Do's" and "Dont's" as regards to crankshafts in the regular Super Stock and Super Stock GT classes.

Basically, if your forged crankshaft meets this criteria it should be acceptable for use.

Thanks. I'll save that link. I'm new at this and just want to make sure I understand everything before I drop cash on a part that might get me bounced if I don't get it right. To that end I ask questions.

Why is it funny? In the past I have seen crankshafts that have been dressed up and the surfaces either polished or treated that the seams cannot be seen.

For a Super Stock GT engine you do not need to go and spend $$$ on a Crower or Bryant crankshaft. There are more affordable crankshafts from other vendors that will do the job and more.

we have 2 different ones in both of my SS motors one is a crower which NHRA looked at twice and blessed both times the other is a RPM off shore unit a company for which we distribute dollar for dollar we don't really see much difference between the 2 except for the cost the Crower cost was 3 times as much and took F O R E V E R to get :eek: they both balanced about the same :) both increased bearing life :)
