Drag racing
Anyone know where that term got started, and why?

Re: Drag racing
I think it had something to do with street racing off the main drag. Kids would cruise around town on the main drag then decide they wanted to race each other.

Re: Drag racing
not a 100% but didnt it start from the term dragging your car to the track with your tow vehicle, instead of towing to the track it was referred to as dragging to the track, hence drag racing...... i dunno thought i read that somewhere once

We even used dirt roads........ |
Re: Drag racing
I heard Don Garlits say it came from farmers. They would ride the plows that horses dragged behind them. When they raced it was referred to as a drag race.

Re: Drag racing
Hi Jim,
One explanation is that years ago the widest streets in a small town was main street which was called the main drag through town. So eventually a race down the main drag became a drag race. Take care, |
Re: Drag racing
"My car is so much faster than yours I can drag you all the way down the street".
Lots of possibilities that all make sense. |
Re: Drag racing
We would be setting & eatting at a drive in hamburger place & a guy would say " DRAG your car " out to race me.....

Re: Drag racing
I thought it was when 2 guys dressed like women raced each other on the street. Maybe in Greenwich Village, NYC. My memory is getting bad though.
