Super Stock Racing

I would like to get into the ranks of Super Stock Racing. I have been reading some of the articles here on class racer and seeing there is either a lack of interest or some changes by NHRA in the class that racers are not happy with. What has happened to the sport? We know the cost has sky rocketed, but how can there be new racers brought to the class? Looking for thoughts.

:) Welcome to Class Racer. Yes, the cost of Super Stock racing has increased by leaps and bounds. But, so has all forms of racing in the last few years. The best place to start is, probably, bracket racing. This will hone your skills and determine if you REALLY want to go Super Stock racing. Talk to as many of the guys and gals at your local track as you can. Also, get advice from the multitude of races that are here on Class Racer. I am on the west coast so I know a few of the locals. Jody and Toby Lang, Mark Faul, Kelly Thomas are 3 that come to mind for advice They are all on here, so should be easy to contact. Brad Burton, the current stock champ is also from the northwest now. I am not sure if he is on this forum, though. Don Elgin, even though he is a stock class racer, has been doing this since the late 60's. Good luck and hope you get lots of good advice from each person you encounter.

Hey carguy49, thanks. I didn't put a lot of info on the site initially . I have actually been a bracket racer for 29 years. For the last 7 years I have had an erg to go Super Stock racing, but have had cold feet. Mostly the cost to stay competitive, well lets say 3 or 4 under the index I would like to be to start with. I do have a pretty nice car and could turn it into a Super Stocker very easily, (Chevy of course ) . I am new to class racer though. I am always on this site to see what's going on, but I see a lot of negatives about Stock and Super Stock racing.

Save yourself a ton of money and headache and play golf...lol

I driven in both stock and super stock. My car is currently set up for Super Stock. I'm on a serious budget and my engine last year would go .2 under index. The new engine might run .350 under in ok air. I have to jump from class to class to dodge heads up runs. My word of advice is if you can't go .8 under then you need to find a class that no one runs or dodge them by jumping classes.

You have a ton of options as far as what setup to go.

I do. Third generation Camaro. All I need is a legal engine, I have everything else. Just don't want to spend the money. (Cold Feet)

Honestly you're almost cheaper buying a car already done. You can buy a car that runs .3 under for $15,000 or less....

CJ, I know! You are 100% correct. My Son drives my Camaro bracket racing. Real nice car, professionally built 4-link all the good stuff. I have looked at turn key super stockers and have inquired on 2 of them. I would have to pull the Camaro from under my Son, either way. I don't want to do that. and can't support 2 race cars. Kind of talking out of both sides of my mouth.LOL

If you can find the right parts at the right time ( don't rush to buy a short block or heads look for good deals) you can build or find a good motor cheap, we bought a .2/.3 under (nhra index) complete motor for 6500 put Atleast 130 runs maybe more and won Atleast 14k+ last year in IHRA and bracket racing some, plus around 3k at s/ss combo races, found a good short block and got the word out for some heads now we have a .4/.5 under motor for less than 5k .... U can be competitive and have fun for a good price I have a blast at NHRA/IHRA races and I also have fun at my local tracks when I get time.... I wouldn't worry about cold feet you'll enjoy it
