1970 Boss 302 Stocker

Just found and sold a '70 Mach 1 to a buddy that will restore it and build it for NHRA Stock with a Boss 302.
The car was an original H code 351C 2bbl, 4-speed, manual steering and drum brake (all 4), fold down rear seat Mach 1. It's a basket case; typical abandoned body shop prisoner of war. But it sure is a straight, rust free Arizona car that probably hasn't seen the road since the late 70's. Needs 1 fender and a deck lid which shouldn't be an issue. I think $4500 was reasonable and I just passed it on to him. Probably take a couple of years by the time all is said and done but he is serious about it and does know a thing or two about S/SS cars. He doesn't want his named mentioned so if you know him, shhhh....

I think it sounds like a heckuva lot of fun and I'll bet close to 535 HP is obtainable. 8500 RPM launches and shifting close to 9,000 RPM sounds like my kind of ride!
When was the last time somebody tried a Boss 302 in Stock? I'm guessing nothing this side of 1990???
He was just given 3 Boss R blocks (factory blems), found some virgin heads for $1000 and an intake for $400.

I'd love to take it for a spin :D

Jeff ,With you finding all these old classic musclecars you have mentioned in some of your previous post you got me excited about all those rust-free cars out there.... I havn,t been out there since 1990 and bought a 69 442 w-30 stick car . My wife is leaving tonight for Green Valley to visit her parents and I got her programed on what to look for ... your buddy should have quite a ride building the Boss 302 combination,,,,,,

My dream car! 1970 Boss 302 Grabber blue Magnum wheels and with the optional 4.30 gears/oil cooler. Certainly my favorite out of all the 60s cars. I'd take it over just about anything of that era.

If memory serves me right the problem with the boss 302 for drag racing were the huge ports in the heads. I think that's the main reason no one runs the combination. If it makes 535 hp it should fly, but I don't think there's any way that thing makes that much power.

That's the same problem, but to a somewhat lesser degree, that the Boss 429 had; the ports were too big.

I hope that car gets built. The 302 Chevrolets are turning north of 8 K pretty easy. And they run 10.30's With todays stock rules, you can run the parts that will let that Boss engine operate where it wants to.

The Boss 302 was a serious player in the modified ranks. When they ran the the super mod classes, you couldn't fill the heads back then. Those cars ran 10.30's with the 330 size engines and 50's with the smaller engines. The parts you car run now. Unlimited valve spring, Smith lifters, large pushrods, Billet cam cores, and ect, you should be able to match what those guys did back then today. If a 302 Chevy can do it, what cant a Boss engine. I sure would love to hear that car going down the track.

Just a side note or question. There is a max cc rule for our heads. How small can they be? Unlimited?

No...it's a minimum, not a maximum.
