Mark J Rebilas ( nhra photographer as well as many other sports) just posted this on his twitter page

"hearing NHRA has banned photographers from using flash on starting line. I rarely use flash on starting line but Wow, just wow..."

Another tweet

" No, the ban is a result of a light malfunction during a sportsman final that gave a guy a red light who hadnt even launched yet"

It has taken NHRA 50 years to figure out that flashes have been triggering the tree?

While NHRA is at it, why don't they ban those ugly *** vests the photographers have to wear.

And further more why has this never happened at an IHRA race?

And I am a track photographer. If you have a track, Baytown for example, with very high bleachers, you can shoot almost an aerial shot. Plus what is NHRA going to do? Tell fans they can't use their flashes at night in the grandstands. One way to solve that, they would have to tell fans that they cant bring cameras in the gate. Ridiclous

Next we will hear that the photographers have to wear a second neck strap in case the first one breaks.

I would have to say the Flash problems are not NHRA only I was in the semi finals in a Nitro Jam a couple of years ago at night and had the IHRA photographer blinde with a flash. I was the faster car and the picture was taken when the slower car left, the photographer was on my side at about the 60 foot mark. Was I happy? Not in the least, in a sport that requires vision sensitive reactions these distractions should not be tolerated.

This is why I think there should be no flash photography until both cars have left the starting line.

While I might not like it, it's just something you have to put out of your mind and concentrate. And of course, that also precludes us from having any final round photos

Well, it's pretty hard to concentrate when you can't see anything. Sure, it probably isn't that big of a deal at tracks like Vegas where the track is well lit, in fact it's almost like daytime there, but at other tracks where the lighting is poor it's a very big deal.

And it doesn't stop you from getting a final round photo. Just take the photo AFTER both cars have left the starting line.
