Laying over...Please help????
went to the track today. Car has a 434 small block with 18 DEGREE heads. t-350 trans with 430 gear. Its a 1980 grand prix. Motor has 35 runs on it and has ran perfect till today. First time run went 9.19 @ 146 mph. then after that it went 9.29. It falls over real hard at the top end of 1st gear. I shift at 7000rpm 1st and 2nd gear and goes threw at 7000. Today the last 3 runs it would get to 6700rpm in 1st gear and lay over hard then after i shifted 2nd to 3rd it pulled hard as it ever did. So what would cause this to happen only at the top end of 1st gear and not the rest of the run???? Like I said it ran great up untill after my first time run today. Thanks for all your input on this...........Rob

Valve springs ????

Re: Laying over...Please help????
I would guess fuel pump or too low float setting.

Re: Laying over...Please help????
yep could be a fuel problem too but if it never has happened before I'm sticking with valve springs!!!

Re: Laying over...Please help????
It has a Rons terminator injection on it. And the springs have 30 runs on them

Re: Laying over...Please help????
I'd still check the springs/pressure could be worn out

Re: Laying over...Please help????
My money would be on fuel, too. Did it come from your drum at home, or did you buy it at the track? I had a drum of Torco 110 that sat over the winter. When I got the car out this spring, it wouldn't run to 60 ft! After spending several hundred upgrading/replacing the ignition system with no improvement, I tried a tank of VP 113 and it ran like a scalded dog.

Re: Laying over...Please help????
for the price of an oil filter I would cut it apart to see if there is any trash in it....

Re: Laying over...Please help????
How about checking the key on the F.I. Pump shaft to th pulley, perhaps the pulley is slipping when the pressure builds up?
I would also verify that tha barrel valve linkage has not rotated out of position (Leak down test it) like wise the fuel shut off linkage. CheckThat the pill and return line are not blocked. Dissemble and check the filter. And if applicable the high speed poppet It's probably a good idea to cut open the oil filter as Wayne has suggested. |
