Bypass neutral switch

Guys have a rear DP RV with a 4 speed Allison transmission. Lately have to move the shift lever to drive and then back to neutral and then sometimes it will start. Getting harder and harder to start. I have replaced the starter relay . Know where the neutral switch is , can I just jump it to see if that is the problem. Planning to go to Indy and this problem is getting worse. Thanks.

Re: Bypass neutral switch

Probably two places to look -

If the shifter is mounted on the floor or on the dash away from the steering column that is likely where the NSS is located. They loosen up after a few 100-thousand cycles.:D

If the shifter is in the column, then your switch is probably on the top of the column, below the dash. They go bad after many years.

Some of the late model Allison's had the switch near the shift-arm on the transmission, usually two wires. You can do a check with an ohmmeter in park and neutral to see if you are getting a complete circuit. Easy replacement, too!

Good luck!

THe neutral switch is on my Allison transmission. There are 2 wires going into the switch . Can I jump between the 2 and see if it starts . I have a multi meter and can check the switch. Thanks.

That's sounds like a good idea. Taking the switch out of the circuit should help isolate your problem.

Of course make sure you chock the rear wheels when you try to start the coach without the switch in place.
