Sunshine Closing-Why?
 

After 50 plus years it has been reported that Florida's Sunshine Drag Strip is done, why is it closing? Thanks in advance.

Thought I'd just read a week or so ago that they got the deal to keep it open?

The Sunshine Dragstrip website - http://www.sunshinedragstrip.com/ has been reporting that February 11th is their last night of operation, as was reported by Agent 1320 on DRO last week. Then yesterday DRO issued a correction of sorts, stating that a local newspaper had reported that the State of Florida had leased both the drag strip and neighboring circle track to a "former racer" for 5 years. No confirmation of this rumor was made available.

Guess we'll wait and see! That would be the second track closing in Florida in the last few months.

Sunshine Dragstrip is going to continue . The entire complex ( oval track and dragstrip ) were purchased by the State of Florida several years ago . They were going to use the property for a new connector road . Florida realized it couldn't afford the new road , and decided to lease the property out instead of just leaving it sit . So it went up for bid , an oval track racer/local business man named Robert Yoho won the bid . I understand that Robert offered the current drag strip promoter a deal to stay on , but the deal was rejected . The current drag strip promoter is behind the ads saying the track is closing .
The oval track will require a lot of work to get it back up and running , the drag strip is supposed to be running again in three weeks or so . I haven't heard who will be running the day to day operations at the strip .
And the name Sunshine Dragstrip cannot be used again , so they are working on a new name .

Thank you for that update, glad to hear the track will remain open. We need another track closing like I need a bigger belly,:D.
