462624 Chevy head question

Does anyone have knowledge about the differences in 462624 small block Chevy cylinder heads? I know that for the most part, they are light weight castings (scalloped along the lower edge) and can be somewhat prone to cracking. There seems to be, however, multiple versions of the same head, all with the same casting number. Some are scalloped and some are not. Some have different markings on the ends than others. Some are found on GM crate motors made in Mexico and there is also a marine version. Which ones are preferred and how can they most easily be identified?

Rick, you're right, they are light weight castings and prone to cracking.

However, if that is what you are required to run, then you have no other choice. I would look for the heaver, flat accross the bottom 'made in Mexico' heads. I think there is more meat there. They were used on early crate motors (late eighties, early 90's.) back when they were called 'Target Master' motors.

Your best bet on finding a pair would be in a junk yard, out of a truck. I was lucky. I found a virgin pair of Target Master "made in Mexico" heads at a swap meet.

I believe that some of the truck applications also had 3/8 exhaust stems

Truck heads were 1.72/1.5, car heads were 1.94/1.5, and they were offered over the counter with 2.02/1.60 (a la L 82 heads) We've never come across a set of heavy castings with that casting number.
