8V battery upgrade on tractor, 14V on race car?

I can't find much discussion on the 14 volt batteries (XS makes a couple) Looks like most racers upgrade to the 16v systems from 12v.
Do ya'll think the 14 volt is a good upgrade/compromise ?

Alternator is an East Coast mini. Engine mgt syst is Mopar (AEM) computer and they recommend up to 14.8 volts.

We were putting a battery on our 1938 Allis Chambers 6v tractor, I found out it is (was) common for farmers to use an extra cell 8v upgrade(I had never heard of) and that's what we used-works great!

Thanks, MWNorris

I have no experience with 14 volts but it seems reasonable that it would be a good upgrade. My question is about charging a 14 volt battery; How is that accomplished?

Yes Bob, that is my thinking. The alt should keep it up at the track & there is a 14V charger available...On the other hand it does not have as many cranking amps as a heavy duty wet cell 12v...

here is my concern; to charge a 12 volt battery requires about 14.5 volts. To charge a 16 volt battery requires about 18.5 volts. So, it is reasonable to estimate it will take about 16.5 volts to charge a 14 volt battery. Thus a dedicated alternator and charger will be required.

Yes, I see Larry, for full charging of the 14v. The 14v is the gell cell type and will drop off quick if gets low from what i understand. I'm leaning toward starting off with a proven heavy duty , high amp 12v battery w/ the mini alternator and keep the battery fully charged before heading to track!
