Super Rare Aluminum bodied Super Sable

Mercury built 40 of these, so is this factory built car (body) legal in Stock or Super Stock?
At 400 pounds less than a steel body it would seem to make at least a good start for a GT car. And no rust!

Word I heard about the engine(Yamaha) was that when Ford got the first one, they put it on the dyno and red lined it. After 20 minutes they had to shut it off. The noise was killing them. The red line was 11K and the engine lived.

I never drove one but friends who did said they were killer. Their FWD program and transmissions weren't up with the engines tech of the day, and they weren't a real good looking car. Just my opinion.

They had a lot of problems with the engines.
1. it is not a free wheeling engine (in other words if cam timing gets off Valves hit pistons. Most Oververhead cam engine have pistons designed so if there is a cam or chain failer of the cam drives they don't crash.
2. There sre several class action lawsuits in the court system about failers. (can not remeber if it was just V6's are both V8's & 6s. Happened around 60,000 miles
Seems as thoug it may have been a problem with cam gear coming loose and slipping on cam. Quick fix if you have one is to tack weld Cam gear to cam as I remeber it.

Owned a 94 SHO sold it at 185000 miles, still ran like a watch. Spanked quite a few "street " racers with that thing would smoke the tires at will. Not bad for a 4door sedan, plus it got around 24 MPG driving it normally. Joe

Joe,
There were quite a few around here and if normal shipping weight was about 3,300#, would guess that at 400 lbs lighter you could have made some extra cash in "selective competitive acceleration trials."

Dick,
That's what Ed Mertz said about the Buick Grand National "We are not making boy racer toys any more" and it took GM 24 years to recover. (Oh wait, I bailed them out...) :-)
