Some Head and Neck Restraint info
FYI for those of you considering a Head and Neck system....per the rule book, and per the D1 tech guys, if you are in an open body car (Roadster or Dragster) and by rule you have to wear a neck collar (9.99 and faster), and you choose to wear a Head and Neck system, with NO neck collar, you MUST wear a 3.3 head sock, or have a skirted helmet...
I verified this just this am.... |

When I did my research before buying the Hans Device, they said it should be used without a neck collar. Some have said you should wear the neck collar in addition but as far as I know it was specific about not wearing a neck collar with the Hans. That being said I guess you would have to wear a head sock. Why not in a closed body car? Regards, Pat I SG1809 |
Re: Some Head and Neck Restraint info
To follow up on the head sock rule. The neck brace acts as a fire barrier for your head in the event of a fire situation. When we use the HANS, which I have and love, you have to have some sort of fire protection for your head and face, so either the neck brace, head sock or helmet skirt will do.
I use a head sock and after you get use to it, it is not bad at all. After seeing the stocker wreck pics on here I'm not so sure we all don't need a hans device or some type of head and neck device. The older I get the more I look at saftey issues and work on things that might save me even if they are not a rule. Like after Bob Wolkowitz wreck, my new car will have carbon fiber interior body panels in the event of the main body coming off to keep my limbs inside the car. |

Pat, not sure if you have to wear a sock or skirt in a door car, but the rule basically says that if you were required to wear a neck collar, and you dont (which with a HANS you dont) then you have to wear one or the other...I was kinda focused on the open car rule...talk to Ryck Campbell he can set you straight...
Lynn, when I was building my car (roadster) I was kinda thinking the same, and I have a tin interior I added , in addition to the body, in case the body got ripped off for some reason...Carbon fiber is probably a better way but at least I have something... |

Re: Some Head and Neck Restraint info
Sorry I didn't make myself clearer. If you have a head and neck restraint, you must have some sort of fire protection in the place of the neck collar, no matter what car.
While some people don't do it, the rule in the rule book is there and you must have some type of protection, head sock, skirt, or neck brace to be in compliance. Hope this helps. |
