What would you do?

If you knew another racer was breaking the rules would you report him and get him suspended or wait and hope for him to do the right thing?

Report the "rumor" to a techman. Then let nature take its course.

Markie -- Great idea - talking to him ( or her ) may clear the air and get the issue at hand resolved ..........if not than there are other avenues to take .

I have heard people say you are banned for a year if you get caught cheating. Is that true? Stiff penalty, but I think our legal system should be as tough. Also ND mentioned that the gentleman who won Stock at Indy was previously DQ'ed for a piston number infraction. If so, did he sit out for a year?

Do you think the infraction of the rules is an advantage? Does this competitor race in your in your class and effect you directly ie heads up? Has this competitor been through tech and tear downs? If the answer is yes to these questions use the same technology and beat them. If you cannot then move on.

I would submit that it makes no difference whether or not the offender is in your class or not, or effects you directly. If you KNOW the racer is in violation it is your duty to your fellow racers to say something. I would suggest speaking with the offender, if that gets no results, then go to the proper tech official.
By your way of thinking, if the guy uses ported heads then you should use them also! Move on? No. It's called RULES. They are there for a reason. Jim

wow. Too many variables to answer with three options in a poll. If I know a guy is blatantly cheating, such as claiming 396 with a 427 or running a carburetor that is way too big, or nitrous or delay box, etc. then I would go directly to tech and point it out, and possibly protest him if need be. If its something less obvious ( suspected acid heads or wrong pistons, light crank, etc) then I would only protest him if it were someone in my own class, and only if i was sure. Something grey area or unstated, I'd say is probably racers just being creative. I may ask tech if "XXXXXX" is legal, and if not they may want to keep a look out. If its something that has no measurable effect, or is just nit picking then its not worth worrying about.

I'd also venture to say thay if you got on the wrong side of someone in tech, they could probably find something to throw you out for. Usually they are good about small items, saying "change that before you come back". I most definitely would not want a reputation as a "tattle tale" amongst the tech department. I've found that most of the division guys are very helpful, I never hesitate to call them if I have a question.
