Shifting on the Stop??
Hello all,
I am fairly new to S/ST racing and just installed an electric shifter. I am running a Glide with a 1.76 1st gear. Car runs 1.40 60 ft and bottom tens. My trans guys tells me I should be shifting while it is on the stop. Is that what most are doing? |
Re: Shifting on the Stop??
We run SC, but virtually everyone I know who runs a stop in any class shifts on it. We're on the stop at 0.00 secs and shift at 1.0 secs.

Re: Shifting on the Stop??
we do as well.

Re: Shifting on the Stop??
The thing I don't understand is that in effect you are killing the low end performance becuase you lose all the gearing advantage of first gear.
Is this all beacuase of the increased consistency from not shifting gears and allowing the engine to work against the converter? I guess this is why you need to run a second or more under the index, right?? |
Re: Shifting on the Stop??
The low gear still launches the car.You just need to find someone with similar combo then adjust from there till you find what the car likes to be consistent.

Re: Shifting on the Stop??
So... I have been engaging the stop at 1.0 and I am basically on it for around 2 seconds. Would you suggest that I need to shift as soon as possible, or around 1.1 secs?
This doesn't casue the trans or converter to explode in a million bits? :) |
Re: Shifting on the Stop??
Most of us go on the stop as soon as you can. I come on at 0.100 but I don't shift on the stop (not enough HP) for what that's worth.........
There are still a few of us that don't have S/G cars running S/ST....:p |
Re: Shifting on the Stop??
Typically, its the high HP cars that are shifting on the stop so they don't spin the tires when they come off the stop. If you are on the stop for 2 seconds then you may want to shift on time while on the stop. However, As Bob said, there are several of us who still shift on RPM and do not have any problem with consistency......I even still shift by hand. It really comes down to your combination......some guys have issues with their engines climbing RPM while on the stop and others don't. It really doesn't matter if your engine climbs RPM while on the stop as long as it does it the same every time. If your car only runs low 10's you would probably be OK shifting on RPM after it comes off the stop.
If you aren't going on the stop until 1.0.....I would switch that to .1 or .2 that will give you more MPH on the big end. Good Luck! |
Re: Shifting on the Stop??
There are two schools of thought about "going on the stop". The vast majority of people go on the stop as soon as possible, something like 0.100 (we are at 0.000, fwiw). Then there are a very few others who go on it at the end of the track hoping to mess with your head. Don't know how successful they are, but I gotta admit it would be fun to watch :)
