I had a '55 hardtop back in high school, early '70's. I got up a street race with a guy that had a '67 GTO. Lots of people were out there for the big drag race, cars lined the highway on both sides with people watching. Both of us pulled out on the highway and cleaned our tires off, the GTO was at the line with a guy flagging us off, I had burned out past the line and was backing up while the "flag man" was getting us lined up even. I was watching him line us up and forgot that I was in reverse. Needless to say that was the gear I tried to leave in. People still rib me about that one today!

I had just gotten a 68 and a half Road Runner and was taught how to really shift a four speed after I had gotten 3 speeding tickets in the first month that I owned the car. Went to the dragstrip and won the race my very first time out. It was the East Coast Winternationals at Miami Hollywood Speedway. Now I was hooked. On the way home with this five foot trophy that I had won, I came to a red light and this car lines up against me reving it up a little. Of course my head is three times it's normal size with my recent "win". So I cut it loose on green, get out on him, pull away and then he makes a right turn. About two seconds later there is red lights coming up on me. Get pulled over and am totally embarrased that I was street racing with this trophy in the front seat. Never street raced again and have been a proponent of racing on the track ever since.

First car was a '64 El Camino with a transplanted '67 Chevelle 396/325, T-400 and Chevelle interior. Pulled out of the HS parking lot smokin the tires into a cloud, pitched it left and pulled out on the road. John Force would have been proud. Stopped safely at the cross walk. Cute girl that had been flirting with me previously was in the cross walk. She leans over the hood, elbows on the hood and bats her eyes at me. So I drop it in low and did a mild power brake just to bark the tires. She runs off. Me and my buddy laugh.
So the cop was behind me the whole time!
He writes me up and said, "were you brakin' or acceleratin' at the crosswalk"?
Brakin' I stated!!!
So I appeared before the judge all cocky. Like how bad could smokin' the tires be anyway?
8 points for wreckless driving and 3 months without a license!

Re: Your Most Embarrasing Street Moment.

The first day of getting my driver's license I left the school grounds and ran to the house(only about a block away) and got my '68 SS 396 Chevelle and drove back to school. When school let out several of my friends who already had fast cars left the parking lot smokingthe tires. I was about the fifth one to leave smoking the tires and went down to first corner took a right and left a black mark and smoke all the way down the hill and up the next and just shifted into high gear when I looked in the rearview mirror to see our friendly town marshall with blue lights flashing come through the smoke.
He didn't write me a ticket but followed me home to make sure mom knew all about my driving that day. Needless to say it was embaressing to have mom scold me in front of the marshall.
Looking back now it was pretty funny but it wasn't too cool when it was happening.

We had a 1/4 mile strip laid out on a Farm to Market road about 2 miles from our High School. Had this buddy with a Bone stock Pontiac Tempest that always wanted to race everyone and didn't beat anyone. He took a load of us guys over at lunch to run down the strip and show us how he was going to be the coolest guy there. (Show off) He had gone to the Army surplus and bought some surplus parachute. He had it tied off to the braces in the trunk and somewhere under the car. Way past the end of the 1/4 nearing the big 1'double o... He had one of our buddies toss the drone chute out. It didn't take but a couple of seconds for all hell to break loose. Windshield broke backglass shattered and we were lucky he still had some control, even with the rear suspension unhooked. Bad thing was we were meeting a big semi gravel truck with this chute deployed. One of the cops that arrived at the scene laid the chute out and that sucker was over 24 feet wide. I'm sure glad that truck didn't get wrapped up in it. Our buddy was cool alright, but had a totaled Tempest.

Re: Your Most Embarrasing Street Moment.

I have to agree, I don't think anyone can top Adger Smith's parachute jump!
I'll give it a try.
1972, still in High School and have a little money. I decide to abandon
my 67' 273 Cuda and break our family's Mopar tradition and purchase a GM vehicle, a 1970 Pontiac GTO 400/350HP 4-speed.
A pretty car, tan w/off-white vinyl top, and 'Endura' bumper, Ansen mags and F-60 x 15" GoodYear tires.
The owner told me it could run in the 13.00's.
I have the car about a week, babying it and acting like 'Joe Cool'.
I spend about a week on the prowl, looking for a chance to blow someone away.
Finally I get my chance, I pull up to a red-light and who is next to me,
my mother, in her 1970 Tor-Red, 340 Duster 4-speed, with a load of groceries and my little sister in the passenger side.
I figured, I'd let my mother take-off first, then I'd punch-it out, and blow her away.
Of course, I have a deadly 400 cubed GTO.
Well the light turns green, and she launches it, I immediately floor it, and what happens.
She keeps pulling away from me, and beats me by an easy half-dozen car lengths.
Later that night, my father asks me what happened. I told him the truth, and that the GTO was supposed to run in the 13.00's.
He took the GTO out for a test drive, and came back.
Told me the GTO wouldn't do 13.00's if you pushed it off the side of a mountain.
I put it up 'For Sale' 1-week later.
Destroyed by the family 340 Duster, with my mother (all 5' 1" and 110 lbs. of her).driving.
