Electric fan ?
 

Well guys the Street/Strip Z-28 is coming alone (1981) & I was wondering if an electric aftermarket fan would be enough to cool it ? The engine is a flat-top 350 487 cyl heads Performer cam & intake. It has a 350th with a B&M 10" Holeshot converter with 3.42 gears it has an external trans cooler. Oh car has a 3 core rad too.

Dono, but an "off the sale rack" Summit House brand twin fan (its a pusher or puller depending on how you throw the blades in, is enough to keep the DP cool as long as weve had it running and around, staging, and tech and all around today, usually just running on 1 fan. (they are set at different temps)

(I got it off the return pile at Summit in Akron for $50) sat on my shelf about a year, before It dawned on me it was perfect size for the Challenger radiatior and I wanted a pusher set up instead of puller.

It like the Z28 has a small grille opening.

Bob with any luck I'm racing a LOT! I still have the Cutlass "stocker" & was planing on going to Farmington next weekend to run an IHRA Div. race but changed shifts @ work & can't get off now. I'll be @ Indy in April so we'll have to have a Beer or 6 ! ;) the Z-28 is going to be my "bracket car" a Parsons & Myers engine is not a cheap thing to get freshened & the Cutlass has a heck of a time getting down the little "home" track anyway. The Z-28 I can drive it down with the Drag Radials on it ...play then drive home. I'm even thinking about getting a points # for National Trails & maybe go to the bracket finals...that's something I have never done!

Had a 74 and a 75 that I raced years ago. Grills not that much different. 1 decent electric fan should do it, especially if you build a shroud for it. I would make it a puller, with shroud around it.

Thanks...that's the problem I don't have a shroud & I would like to have the electric fan to help cool between rounds. I was looking @ a duel fan 3100 cfm fan BTW

I put a Chevy HHR fan and shroud system in a 68 Velle. fit like it was supposed to be there. 2 small brackets and 2 small drill holes. 100 bucks too. buy the painless fan kit and find a chevy plug from a junk yard, I did from a chevy astro van. runs cool, low amp draw too.
friends been driving it since the fall w no heating problems.

Greg, look for a fan unit that puts out the most cfm. A lot of the aftermarket fans are OK for the strip but not very good on the street. I would try to use one off of a production vehicle and you should be OK. We use an electic fan off of a Cadillac XLR in the race car. The fan is manufactured by Siemens and puts out over 900 cfm. It definitely gets the job done. Also use a thermistor to control the on and off cycling of the fan for better performance.

Isnt that what tin snips angle iron (for bending) and hammers are for ?

Seriously, Ive learned strangly enough, 9 times out of 10 its FASTER and better to fit and fabricate anything and everything yourself, not to mention cheaper.

Thinkof all the time, researching, pricing, ordereing shipping and installing and well on something like a shroud Id say some alloy sheet, and off to the races.

If you want REALLY cool, "formed" looking alloy sheet, snad bags bowling balls and shot puts do wonders, when youre done it looks like it was countoured. Give it a whirl.

What you got to loose 20 bucks in sheet and a weekend of trying something new ?
